Repairing relations
Although, World War II was a horrific experience for everyone involved, today Japan and the U.S. are allies. This came about because of America’s willingness to repair and rebuild what they has destroyed and Japan's willingness to completely change their country's organization. The U.S. appointed an official, General Douglas A. MacArthur, that put in place reforms that would partake in the rebuilding of Japan’s military, political, economical and social aspects of life. Although all the counties in the Allied council were involved in the efforts to rebuild Japan, MacArthur has the final say in the decisions that were made. While he was in Japan, he tried to uplift the economy and distribute the wealth that was being held by rice landlords. This was achieved with the help of the Supreme Command of Allied Powers (SCAP), land reforms were presented. Unlike the Soviet Union who was bent on punishing the occupied East Germany and taking advantage of the geographical position for political reasons, the US was more interested in rebuilding and modernizing Japan. The US also then gave Japan back to itself, with Japan self-governing again in 1952. Post occupation, Japan and the US have continued to be close allies. In contrast, the Soviet Union controlled Eastern Germany until 1990(Occupation and Reconstruction of Japan).
